A-BE-C Elects Dr. Paul Merguerian as Advisory Board Chair
A-BE-C recently elected Dr. Paul Merguerian to a two year term as Advisory Board Chair. Our board helps to shape and guide the strategy of the organization and is vital to the success of our mission: To make the highest standards of treatment, care and support within reach of all people affected by bladder exstrophy.
About Dr. Merguerian
Dr. Paul Merguerian is the Division Chief of Urology at Seattle Children’s and Professor of Urology at the University of Washington.
Specialty – Dr. Merguerian is an accomplished scholar, a committed teacher and mentor, and surgeon. His area of academic focus has been on complex reconstruction especially bladder exstrophy, and safety, efficiency, and cost within the field of pediatric urology.
Education – Dr. Merguerian received his medical degree from Hadassah Medical School in Jerusalem and completed his Residency in Urology at the University of Rochester. He then went on to complete a Fellowship in Pediatric Urology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He received his Masters in Science from the Dartmouth Institute of Health Policy and Clinical Practice, and has received Lean Six Sigma training at the Dartmouth School of Engineering.
Other – Dr. Merguerian has held appointments at Stanford, the University of Toronto, and Dartmouth where he was the director of the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth. Currently he is the Division Chief of Urology at Seattle Children’s Hospital and a Professor of Urology at the University of Washington. In addition to his extensive work in process improvement and quality assurance, Dr. Merguerian serves as a key faculty mentor for Pediatric Urology Fellows at Seattle Children’s Hospital and the University of Washington; as a clinic teacher and preceptor for Urology residents. Pediatric Urology, Bladder Exstrophy, Hypospadias Neurogenic bladder and reconstructive pelvic medicine.

“Dr. Shukla served A-BE-C tirelessly as the Board Chair and was instrumental in launching our Centers of Excellence program. His global perspective to treatment and care of our families in the United States and abroad has guided A-BE-C as we have expanded our reach in India and now Uganda. A-BE-C will be forever indebted to him for his many contributions to growing and improving our organization,” stated Artigas. “At the same time we are excited for the vision Dr. Merguerian has for the organization during his term and we look forward to the growth A-BE-C will experience under his direction.”
Dr. Aseem Shukla was elected to a two year term as board chair in 2017. He will remain on the A-BE-C Advisory Council and will continue to support the Global Care committee within the organization.
